The Gjirokastra Conservation and Development Office

Gjirokastra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

The city was seen as being

  1. an exceptional testimony to a long-lasting and also disappeared society and lifestyle, influenced by the culture and tradition of Islam in the Ottoman period
  2. a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, with a series of outstanding examples of the distinctive tower house architectural style

Concerted efforts are being made to renovate the historic town and to revitalise its economy. You too can help. If you would like to find out more, contact the Gjirokastra Conservation and Development Office on www.gjirokastra.org.
