The history of the museum

The first museum at Butrint was built in the late1930s by the Italian Archaeological Mission. The intention was to house the finds from the extensive excavations undertaken between 1928 and 1940.

The original museum was located within the reconstructed castle on the Acropolis of Butrint as shown by the plans drawn up by Igino Epicoco, the draughtsman of Luigi Maria Ugolini. The museum was essentially organised around two spaces: marble finds (statues, inscriptions, etc) were displayed in the courtyard, with smaller finds in an adjoining room.
